When I first moved to this part of Mexico no one knew anything about our Halloween traditions but over the years with more immigration from the north (Yes, immigration goes both north and south) Halloween has been embraced with gusto. What kid wouldn't pester their parent to add another tradition given the opportunity to go door to door for candy?
We immigrants have also embraced the Mexican tradition of celebrating Día De Los Muertos- Day of the Dead. It's a festive way of remembering family and friends who have passed. At home and in the schools altars are made and decorated with items for the living to remember the departed. Memorabilia such as photos, the dead ones special food & drink, a piece of clothing, flowers. Things to entice the dead to come back and join in on the rememberance. It's also a school holiday.
